When most people think about marijuana, the first two ingredients that come to mind are THC and CBD. Often, people view THC for recreational use and CBD for medical use. However, a new study shows that medical marijuana with THC provides therapeutic effects that soothe symptoms of nausea.
What’s the Difference Between CBD and THC?
THC and CBD are both cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant, but they have their differences. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects, giving you that “high” feeling. THC stimulates cells in the brain to release dopamine, creating feelings of euphoria.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of cannabis, and unlike THC, CBD does not cause a “high.” In most cases, CBD has little to no effect on how the user physically feels. However, CBD still has plenty of therapeutic properties that can help with anxiety, sleep and inflammation in the body.
Which is Better for Medicinal Effects: CBD or THC?
Federal law bans THC. However, CBD is legal as long as it doesn’t contain more than 0.3% THC.
But which is better for medicinal effects?
A recent study highlighted that THC is medicinal. In this study, researchers at The University of New Mexico found that cannabis users using THC to soothe symptoms of nausea, a common symptom that is often difficult to treat using conventional treatments, found relief in as quickly as five minutes.
The study further examined the effects of THC compared to CBD among consumers. Results showed that “THC, which is typically associated with recreational use, seemed to improve treatment among consumers of Cannabis flower, while our CBD, more commonly associated with medical use, actually seemed to be associated with less symptom relief.”
While further research is needed to determine THC’s full potential for medical use, this study promotes a better understanding of cannabis and some of its medicinal benefits.
